A Sculpture by John T. Young:

" Seattle, Washington, 1998
Miami, Florida, 2002
and future strategic locations around the world.

A Global Monument to World Peace and Recycling"

John Burroughs,
Lawyers' Committee on Nuclear Policy: "On a New Year's day walk in Magnuson Park, Seattle, Jackie Cabasso and I observed this project: diving-plane fins from decommissioned United States Navy attack submarines built in the 1960 installed to look like a pod of whales. Another installation has been done in Miami. It was a great thing to see. According to the website: -The hope is that similar "pods" will be created around the country and the world, as symbols for peace on a global scale. The artist is particularly interested in creating them in Russia near the former Soviet submarine bases in Vladivostock or St. Petersburg, in the desert of the American Southwest, along the coast of Southern California, and on the East Coast.-"

Let's make 2006 the year we end the war in Iraq, and let's join together with women from every corner of the world to do it!

Women's Call for Peace: An Urgent Appeal

We, the women of the United States, Iraq and women worldwide, have had enough of the senseless war in Iraq and the cruel attacks on civilians around the world. We've buried too many of our loved ones. We've seen too many lives crippled forever by physical and mental wounds. We've watched in horror as our precious resources are poured into war while our families' basic needs of food, shelter, education and healthcare go unmet. We've had enough of living in constant fear of violence and seeing the growing cancer of hatred and intolerance seep into our homes and communities.

This is not the world we want for ourselves or our children. With fire in our bellies and love in our hearts, we women are rising up - across borders - to unite and demand an end to the bloodshed and the destruction.

We have seen how the foreign occupation of Iraq has fueled an armed movement against it, perpetuating an endless cycle of violence. We are convinced that it is time to shift from a military model to a conflict-resolution model that includes the following elements:...."

The Sadako Story

    The Sadako Story:

"The paper crane has become an international symbol of peace in recent years as a result of it's connection to the story of a young Japanese girl named Sadako Sasaki born in 1943. Sadako was two years old when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. As she grew up, Sadako was a strong, courageous and athletic girl. In 1955, at age 11, while practicing for a big race, she became dizzy and fell to the ground. Sadako was diagnosed with Leukemia, "the atom bomb" disease.

Sadako's best friend told her of an old Japanese legend which said that anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes would be granted a wish. Sadako hoped that the gods would grant her a wish to get well so that she could run again. She started to work on the paper cranes and completed over 1000 before dying on October 25, 1955 at the age of twelve."

"The point is that she never gave up. She continued to make paper cranes until she died...."

Multimedia Gandhi Festivals will be organized in various countries to commemorate the event and to celebrate the relevance of Gandhi's life and work to the 21st century. To us, the application of love, truth and nonviolence - as preached and practised by Mahatma Gandhi - will ultimately lead to a more peaceful and humane world. Therefore, the thorough study of his thoughts and deeds, according to Gandhi's saying My Life is My Message, is more important than ever before.

_Peace_Culture_ and _Nuclear_Weapon_ related news and documents selected by
The Global Anti-Nuclear Alliance, can be found at GANA's News-index:
