For a greener planet.

"For a greener planet" is a site by Ak Malten and is the official website of his new organization: Pro Peaceful Energy Use. The groups aim is to promote True Peaceful Energy forms and use.

True Peaceful Energy forms and use are sustainable, endless, easy to be exploited - certainly on small scale - and free for all - like solar -, wind -, water -, and geothermal power - except for the means to exploit it, which even can be cheap for small off the grid systems AND are not related to War and / or Weapons - like oil, gas and / or nuclear energy forms and use.

the Pro Peaceful Energy Use group used to be known as the Global Anti-Nuclear Alliance which ceased to exist as of September 2008.

the Pro Peaceful Energy Use group is member of the Abolition 2000 Network - A Global Network to Eliminate Nuclear Weapons and to phase out Nuclear Power

We would like to make known to our readers and friends, that the Pro Peaceful Energy Use group has decided to endorse the World March for Peace and Nonviolence.

And it is my personal wish and hope that more individuals and organizations will follow. We need more public support to reach for a Nuclear (Weapon) Free World; in my vision also a greener world in which the use of sustainable energy forms are no longer related to conflicts and war like oil, gas and nuclear energy forms were before.

Modest Climate Change Steps Are Goal of Meeting in Mexico.

By REUTERS

November 28, 2010

CANCÚN, Mexico (Reuters) — Nearly 200 nations were to meet in Mexico on Monday to try to agree on modest steps to slow climate change, a United Nations gathering overshadowed by global economic problems and strains between the top two emitters, the United States and China.

The 12-day meeting, in a heavily guarded resort, will seek to revive negotiations stalled after last year’s Copenhagen summit meeting fell short of a binding United Nations treaty to slow global warming.

One would have hoped for more progress than modest steps, but any step in the right direction will help of course...

This decade 'warmest on record'.

By Richard Black Environment correspondent, BBC News website, Copenhagen

This year is set to be the fifth warmest on record, says the Met Office

The first decade of this century is "by far" the warmest since instrumental records began, say the UK Met Office and World Meteorological Organization.

Their analyses also show that 2009 will almost certainly be the fifth warmest in the 160-year record.

Burgeoning El Nino conditions, adding to man-made greenhouse warming, have pushed 2009 into the "top 10" years.

The US space agency Nasa suggests that a new global temperature record will be set "in the next one or two years"....

Drought under global warming: a review.

By Aiguo Dai

online: 19 OCT 2010
Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Climate Change - Wiley Online Library

This article reviews recent literature on drought of the last millennium, followed by an update on global aridity changes from 1950 to 2008. Projected future aridity is presented based on recent studies and our analysis of model simulations. Dry periods lasting for years to decades have occurred many times during the last millennium over, for example, North America, West Africa, and East Asia. These droughts were likely triggered by anomalous tropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs), with La Nin˜ a-like SST anomalies leading to drought in North America, and El-Nin˜ o-like SSTs causing drought in East China. Over Africa, the southward shift of the warmest SSTs in the Atlantic and warming in the Indian Ocean are responsible for the recent Sahel droughts. Local feedbacks may enhance and prolong drought. Global aridity has increased substantially since the 1970s due to recent drying over Africa, southern Europe, East and South Asia, and eastern Australia. Although El Nin˜ o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), tropical Atlantic SSTs, and Asian monsoons have played a large role in the recent drying, recent warming has increased atmospheric moisture demand and likely altered atmospheric circulation patterns, both contributing to the drying. Climate models project increased aridity in the 21st century over most of Africa, southern Europe and the Middle East, most of the Americas, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Regions like the United States have avoided prolonged droughts during the last 50 years due to natural climate variations, but might see persistent droughts in the next 20–50 years. Future efforts to predict drought will depend on models’ ability to predict tropical SSTs.

Updated: US Senators: More Coal, Oil and Nukes Are "Solution" for Global Warming.

Friday 11 December 2009

by: Art Levine, t r u t h o u t | Report

The once-demonized nuclear industry got its biggest boost in years Thursday.

A bipartisan coalition of US senators put forward a "framework" for climate legislation that aims to dramatically increase off-shore oil drilling, ensure a "future for coal" and, above all, ramp up subsidies for the financially risky nuclear power industry. The announcement was timed, in part, to send a signal to negotiators at the climate conference in Copenhagen that the US Senate is supposedly serious about climate reform....

This documentary is a film about the protest which will come from our children against the environmental contamination and degradation by our generation of parents to build even bigger crops to earn more money on the short therm with the use of pesticides etc. The youngsters will lead this protest because they are the ones to be most affected by our greed in the form of incurable illnesses they carry!

It looks that this is of topic here, but is has everything to do with the same greed by investors and multi nationals, which brings us recourse wars over oil, gas, uranium and water etc. and prevents our governments to fight Global Warming in a meaningful way.

Nuclear weapons pose a constant threat to global peace and security. World leaders have the ability to detonate a nuclear weapon within minutes with the push of a single button.

The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) has noticed that the traditional “nuclear button” -the button that is pressed to launch a nuclear weapon- is rather boring in design, and doesn´t symbolize the grave consequences of its use. Even for those not educated in Law it is a very understandable document on International Law and Nuclear Weapons.

Of course it is courageous of these 5 Disarm Now Plowshares elderly activists to go over the fence, maybe facing time in prison for that, but what we need is that next time there are at least 100 or more youngsters and the action after that even more and so on, to go over the fence with them in their support !

What we need and I agree with Steven Leeper calling for that, is a massive grassroots movement to uphold International Law, to Disarm all Nuclear Weapons, to Stop the Wars, to Work for Peace, to Fight Global Warming, to give themselves a Green and Peaceful Future !

Shifting to 100% Renewable Energy Would Save Money.

Most of the technology needed to shift the world from fossil fuel to clean, renewable energy already exists. Implementing that technology requires overcoming obstacles in planning and politics, but doing so could result in a 30 percent decrease in global power demand, say Stanford civil and environmental engineering Professor Mark Z. Jacobson and University of California-Davis researcher Mark Delucchi. The study further provides examples of how a combination of renewable energy sources could be used to meet hour-by-hour power demand, addressing the commonly asked question, given the inherent variability of wind speed and sunshine, can these sources consistently produce enough power? To make clear the extent of those hurdles — and how they could be overcome — they have written an article that is the cover story in the November issue of Scientific American.

An Update: The world can be powered by alternative energy, using today's technology, in 20-40 years, says Stanford researcher Mark Z. Jacobson.

Stanford Report, January 26, 2011

A new study co-authored by Stanford researcher Mark Z. Jacobson and UC-Davis researcher Mark A. Delucchi analyzing what is needed to convert the world's energy supplies to clean and sustainable sources says that it can be done with today's technology at costs roughly comparable to conventional energy. But converting will be a massive undertaking on the scale of the moon landings. What is needed most is the societal and political will to make it happen.

The Uncertain Future of Nuclear Energy: IPFM Research Report No. 9

International Panel on Fissile Materials (IPFM) has released a new research report "The Uncertain Future of Nuclear Energy." The report provides an overview of the status of nuclear power worldwide, with country studies for China, India, Japan, South Korea, the United States and Western Europe. It discusses why the International Atomic Energy Agency and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency project nuclear power as approximately maintaining but not greatly increasing during the next two to four decades its 14% of global electric power generation in 2009. The reasons include the currently very limited capacity to build nuclear power plants, high capital costs in North America and Western Europe, the perception by the private sector that nuclear power plants are risky investments, and continuing public mistrust of the nuclear industry despite the passage of two and a half decades since the Chernobyl accident.

Frank von Hippel is the editor and lead author of the report, which includes contributions by Matthew Bunn, Anatoli Diakov, Tadahiro Katsuta, Charles McCombie, M.V. Ramana, Ming Ding, Yu Suyuan, Tatsujiro Suzuki, and Susan Voss.

Reject French reactors for Jaitapur
.

A Gopalakrishnan
Express News Service
First Published : 02 Dec 2010 11:42:00 PM IST
Last Updated : 03 Dec 2010 12:12:03 AM IST

On November 26, the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) accorded environmental clearance for the 6x1650 MWe nuclear power project in Jaitapur, Maharashtra. Extensive opposition to the project, notably from the Konkan Bachao Samiti (KBS), was overruled by the MoEF in granting this clearance. Environment minister, Jairam Ramesh, in a press statement however clarified that, "I can take on board only the ecological objections raised by the KBS. I have asked the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and its partner Areva to address the other economic, commercial, safety and technological issues. Indeed, I do believe that NPCIL must significantly improve and expand its public outreach programme".

Areva is a predominantly state-owned nuclear power company in France, which has developed the 1650 MWe European Pressurised Reactor (EPR), based on the French N4 and the German Konvoi reactor types. But, what is the maturity of the EPR technology today? Till date, no EPR has been constructed and commissioned for operation anywhere in the world. There are four EPRs in different stages of construction elsewhere, and two of them are already facing serious problems and delay. Areva sold the first EPR to Finland and this plant construction started in 2005. Several construction and design problems have delayed the start-up of this plant to the second half of 2013 - a delay of 3.5 years, with a cost escalation of 50 per cent. France itself decided to set up the second EPR, and the construction of this unit started in December 2007. Very similar construction and safety issues have led to a 50 per cent cost increase and a delay of commissioning to 2014. China bought two EPRs, but they are moving cautiously towards completion dates of 2013 and 2014.

Realising that the EPR is in trouble, the French government asked Francois Roussely, a former chairman of the Electricite de France (EDF), in October 2009 to evaluate the status of the EPR and the French nuclear industry in general. The Roussely Report (July 2010) has concluded that the credibility of the EPR has been seriously damaged by the problems of the two reactors under construction. Roussely states, "The complexity of the EPR comes from (questionable) design choices, notably of the power level, containment, core-catcher, and redundancy of systems. It is certainly a handicap for its construction, and its cost - the EPR should therefore be further optimised based on feedback from the EPRs under construction".

The White House - President Barack Obama's Agenda on Energy And The Environment.

Energy & Environment

"So we have a choice to make. We can remain one of the world's leading importers of foreign oil, or we can make the investments that would allow us to become the world's leading exporter of renewable energy. We can let climate change continue to go unchecked, or we can help stop it. We can let the jobs of tomorrow be created abroad, or we can create those jobs right here in America and lay the foundation for lasting prosperity."

-President Obama, March 19, 2009

Progress

  • The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act included more than $80 billion in clean energy investments that will jump-start our economy and build the clean energy jobs of tomorrow:
o $11 billion for a bigger, better, and smarter grid that will move renewable energy from the rural places it is produced to the cities where it is mostly used, as well as for 40 million smart meters to be deployed in American homes.
o $5 billion for low-income home weatherization projects.
o $4.5 billion to green federal buildings and cut our energy bill, saving taxpayers billions of dollars.
o $6.3 billion for state and local renewable energy and energy efficiency efforts.
o $600 million in green job training programs – $100 million to expand line worker training programs and $500 million for green workforce training.
o $2 billion in competitive grants to develop the next generation of batteries to store energy.
  • Increasing, for the first time in more than a decade, the fuel economy standards for Model Year 2011 for cars and trucks so they will get better mileage, saving drivers money and spurring companies to develop more innovative products.
  • The President issued a memorandum to the Department of Energy to implement more aggressive efficiency standards for common household appliances, like dishwashers and refrigerators. Through this step, over the next three decades, we´ll save twice the amount of energy produced by all the coal-fired power plants in America in any given year.
  • Supporting the first steps of a legally-binding treaty to reduce mercury emissions worldwide.
  • On Earth Day 2009, the President unveiled a program to develop the renewable energy projects on the waters of our Outer Continental Shelf that produce electricity from wind, wave, and ocean currents. These regulations will enable, for the first time ever, the nation to tap into our ocean´s vast sustainable resources to generate clean energy in an environmentally sound and safe manner.

Guiding Principles

To take this country in a new direction, the President is working with Congress to pass comprehensive legislation to protect our nation from the serious economic and strategic risks associated with our reliance on foreign oil and the destabilizing effects of a changing climate. Policies to advance energy and climate security should promote economic recovery efforts, accelerate job creation, and drive clean energy manufacturing by:

Investing in the Clean Energy Jobs of the Future

President Obama does not accept a future in which the jobs and industries of tomorrow take root beyond our borders. It is time for the United States to lead again. Under President Obama, we will lead again, by developing an American clean energy industry, a 21st century economy that flourishes within our borders.

  • Creating new Jobs in the Clean Energy Economy. Drive the development of new, green jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced.
  • Investing in the Next Generation of Energy Technologies. Invest $150 billion over ten years in energy research and development to transition to a clean energy economy.

Securing our Energy Future

Our reliance on oil poses a threat to our economic security. Over the last few decades, we have watched our economy rise and fall along with the price of a barrel of oil. We must commit ourselves to an economic future in which the strength of our economy is not tied to the unpredictability of oil markets. We must make the investments in clean energy sources that will curb our dependence on fossil fuels and make America energy independent.

  • Breaking Dependence on Oil. Promote the next generation of cars and trucks and the fuels they run on.
  • Producing More Energy at Home. Enhance U.S. energy supplies through responsible development of domestic renewable energy, fossil fuels, advanced biofuels and nuclear energy.
  • Promoting Energy Efficiency. Promote investments in the transportation, electricity, industrial, building and agricultural sectors that reduce energy bills.

Closing the Carbon Loophole and Cracking Down on Polluters

We must take immediate action to reduce the carbon pollution that threatens our climate and sustains our dependence on fossil fuels. We have had limits in place on pollutants like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and other harmful emissions for some time. After decades of inaction, we will finally close the carbon pollution loophole by limiting the amount of carbon polluters are allowed to pump into the atmosphere.

  • Closing the Carbon Loophole. By stemming carbon pollution through a market-based cap, we can address in a systematic way all the energy challenges that we face: curbing our dependence on foreign oil, reducing our use of fossil fuels, and promoting new industries right here in America.
  • Protecting American Consumers. Revenues generated by closing the carbon loophole will be returned to the people, especially vulnerable families, communities, and businesses.
  • Promoting U.S. Competitiveness. Ensure a level playing field for domestic manufacturing and secure significant actions to combat climate change by our trading partners.

Comment Ak Malten, Pro Peaceful Energy Use:
While in general I have warm feelings about President Barack Obama's Agenda on Energy And The Environment I do not like the following: February 03, 2010 2:41 PM EST Obama Announces Steps to Boost Biofuels, Clean Coal

I have with many others serious questions about the possibility of a Clean Coal Technology. What will you do with the CO2 captured is the main question in this discussion of course. That CO2 will come out of the burning of coal is an undeniable fact.

And although "The Nuclear Power Renaissance" is not found as a Global Warming fighting solution in the Agenda above I had hoped, with many others, that Nuclear Power would also be recognized as not green, too wasteful, too toxic, too dangerous, too expensive, not CO2 emission free and a dangerous Nuclear Weapon proliferation possibility.

And thus I had hoped that future dependance on Nuclear Power would also be regarded as a mistake and Nuclear Power would be seen as energy form that should be phased out.
You might want to click the following link, or just scroll down, to find out more on Nuclear Power:

No UNFORTUNATELY still two-thirds of the budget of the DOE will be spend on the Nuclear Weapons Complex !
DOE's Nuclear Millstone by Robert Alvarez at www.ips-dc.org

Why, one might ask, is this happening ?

Obama in his speech in Prague, April 5, 2009 said and I quote: "....So today, I state clearly and with conviction America's commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons. (Applause.) I'm not naive. This goal will not be reached quickly -- perhaps not in my lifetime. It will take patience and persistence. But now we, too, must ignore the voices who tell us that the world cannot change. We have to insist, "Yes, we can."...."

After those words I expected that the spending on the Nuclear Weapon Complex would become less. But instead there now is talk about a surge in Nuclear Weapon spending !!

The end of the Cold War offers clues as to how this can work. The emergence of Mikhail Gorbachev and perestroika beginning in 1985 led Moscow to seek relief from international competition and pursue "mutual security." This in turn led to the 1987 treaty eliminating all U.S. and Soviet intermediate-range nuclear forces (INF). INF, among other factors, helped encourage further political change in the Soviet Union, which ultimately led to the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union. These developments opened the way for the 1991 START Treaty and created a disarming environment for the denuclearization of Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, as well as South Africa's 1989 decision to dismantle its secret nuclear arsenal.

It is only realistic to think that the eventual elimination of all nuclear arsenals would proceed in a similar co-evolutionary process with improvements in U.S.-NATO-Russian relations, U.S.-Sino-Russian relations, Sino-Indian relations, Indo-Pak relations, and so on. In the Middle East, Israel's willingness to move toward nuclear disarmament would depend on achieving durable peace with its neighbors and verifiable guarantees that Iran and other regional states would not acquire nuclear weapons.

The elimination of nuclear arsenals would require dramatic advancement of verification and enforcement arrangements. Nuclear weapons cannot be disinvented. Obama's critics pretend that disarmament would require disinvention, which enables them to chortle that the project is absurd on its face. Yet the president surely understands that no human invention can be erased from memory or computer files. Nevertheless, societies have chosen to do without artifacts that they deem excessively harmful or abhorrent. Gas chambers, for example, can still be made, but civilization chose to dismantle them and prevent their reconstitution and employment. Ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have not been disinvented, but the world has implemented a prohibition on their production and use. The challenge is to agree on prohibition and then devise arrangements to verify it and take decisive action to enforce it...."

Consequences of nuclear weapons.

Recent scientific studies have found that a war fought with the deployed U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals would leave Earth virtually uninhabitable.1 In fact, NASA computer models have shown that even a “successful” first strike by Washington or Moscow would inflict catastrophic environmental damage that would make agriculture impossible and cause mass starvation. Similarly, in the January 2010 edition of Scientific American, Alan Robock and Brian Toon, the foremost experts on the climatic impact of nuclear war, warn that the environmental consequences of a “regional” nuclear war fought between India and Pakistan would cause a global famine that could kill one billion people.2

Two Worlds Clash Over Nuclear Weapons.

By Bob Rigg

When the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference – the world´s largest and most important five-yearly gathering devoted to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation – began in New York, on Monday 3 May, it attracted only marginal media attention. The previous NPT review conference, held in 2005, had fallen apart, unable even to agree on an agenda. If the present conference fails to identify concrete solutions to pressing problems, the treaty will enter into terminal decline, and nuclear weapons will proliferate....

....Perhaps the most glaring deficiency of the NPT lies in the hierarchy at the heart of the NPT regime since it entered into force in 1970. The treaty distinguishes between the privileged nobility of the nuclear weapons states and the lumpenproletariat of the non-nuclear weapons states....

Impressions of the Nuclear Security Summit.

There is no question in my mind that the Nuclear Security Summit was a remarkable event. It is a major accomplishment that the U.S. was able to pull it off at all, elevating to the highest level an issue that had not previously received the degree of attention commensurate with the threat. And several of the "house gifts"-specific commitments that the U.S. cajoled international attendees into bringing along to the party-are substantial accomplishments in their own right. In particular, world security will be enhanced by the pledges made by Ukraine and Mexico to get rid of their stockpiles of bomb-usable highly enriched uranium (HEU); by Canada to return to the U.S. its inventory of lightly irradiated (and hence still vulnerable) HEU; and by Russia to shut down its last remaining plutonium production reactor. In these cases the countries in question were dragging their feet, and the summit gave them a needed push.

However, I also think that the Obama administration, by playing it safe, missed the opportunity to truly advance the goal of increased nuclear security around the world by ensuring that all vulnerable weapon-usable materials are protected against the threats we face today and in the coming decades. Even worse, it has made some missteps that could actually work to undermine this goal. As a result, the summit's outcome, unfortunately, was aligned with our modest pre-summit expectations (see UCS statement).

The summit, for all its hoopla, ended up merely endorsing the current weak regime governing nuclear material security. The communiqué reaffirms that nuclear material security is "the fundamental responsibility of States." This sounds good on its face but actually reinforces the status quo notion that security is a domestic concern and that the international community should keep its nose out of individual states' business unless they are invited in on a voluntary basis. This attitude is inconsistent with the oft-stated but absolutely true observation that a security vulnerability anywhere is a threat to countries everywhere.

In contrast, UCS believes that protection of weapon-usable materials from theft is fundamentally an international responsibility and is too important to be left up to individual states to implement as they see fit, especially given the wide range of views from one country to another regarding the seriousness of the threat. What is needed, and what the summit should have endorsed instead, is a new international regime with stringent mandatory standards, formal peer reviews, and tough enforcement mechanisms....

City of Caen:7 persons arrested yesterday got free this evening but will have to pay a bail of 15.000 euros before 10 days.
3 of them , injured by the riotpolice brutally cutting the chains, had been moved into the hospital: 2 with serious burns on their arms needed a skin transplant, 1 with some hand's sinews cut needed a surgery. Their lawyer intends to prosecute the riotpolicemen for unnecessary and deliberate violences. Several organisations probably will support this way.

The route of the train have been secretly changed during the last night. He passed through the big cities Reims and Strasbourg . Mayors and local authorities were not informed of that.

Today, November 6: This morning, about 10 Greenpeace activists arrested near the border, before starting to block the train.

City of Berg : 1250 persons sitting on the railway track.

City of Kehl, at the German border: 3 activists hanging from a bridge stopped the train during 2 hours.

7pm: City of Dannenberg: peaceful demo by thousands people.

In Germany , the train is made like that: 2 locomotives + 6 carriages for riotcops + 11 CASTOR wagons ( nuclear waste) + 6 carriages for riotcops + 2 locomotives.

The train is now much delayed due to many protest actions.

Now, if you wonder why the reprocessing of Nuclear Waste out of all Europe is done in France and the UK.

The answer is very simple they use the plutonium, a product from the reprocessing, to be able to build their Nuclear Weapons. They did so right from the start, as intended, and are still doing it....

Yes, the UK and France are the only two countries in Europe with reprocessing facilities _And_ the only two countries in Europe with a Nuclear Weapon force independent from the US.

So that is a second and in my opinion the main reason why all this unnecessary nuclear waste transports are taking place in Europe, but not only there....

The environmental consequences of the Mayak plant in the Ural Region, Russia.

Documentary WASTELAND
06.11.2009
    * video: radioactive waste

The documentary is about the environmental consequences of the Mayak plant in the Ural Region, Russia. The Mayak facility is a secret plant intended for weapon-grade plutonium production and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. During the 60 years of its activity dozens of thousands square kilometers of the Russian territory was contaminated with the discharge of radioactive waste and became wasteland. As a result, hundred thousands people fell victim to the Mayak activity.
Thanks to many years´ efforts of Gosman Kabirov and Milya Kabirova (NGO “Techa”), Natalia Mironova (NGO «Movement for Nuclear Safety») and many other social activists, resettlement process was commenced in the radioactive village of Muslumovo on the Techa river in the Chelyabinsk Region .
Nevertheless, the spent nuclear fuel is being sent to Mayak. The discharge of radioactive waste continuously contaminates the environment. Nuclear energy consumers in the North-West Russia consider this industry clean and cheap and bear no social responsibility for safety of the region where spent nuclear fuel is transported.
Rosatom continues to construct new NPPs at the expense of tax-payers and relocate dangerous radioactive waste thus undermining the safety of the regions where the waste disposal takes place.

Time to Ban Production of Nuclear Weapons Material.

A new global treaty that cuts off production of plutonium and highly enriched uranium for nuclear weapons could jump-start nuclear disarmament and help prevent proliferation

By Alexander Glaser, Zia Mian and Frank N. von Hippel

Editor's Note: On Jan. 18, diplomats from 65 countries at the U.N. Conference on Disarmament in Geneva will try to agree to begin talks on a treaty that would stop the production of plutonium and highly enriched uranium for nuclear weapons. Cutting off production of fissile materials for weapons could provide the basis for irreversible reductions of all nuclear weapons.

In the article below, Alexander Glaser, Zia Mian and Frank von Hippel, all at Princeton University and affiliated with the International Panel on Fissile Materials, propose the basic pillars of a fissile material cutoff treaty, how compliance with such a treaty could be verified and who should pay the tab.

India blocks nuclear meeting -- Fission group is 'hostile to India', government claims.

By Geoff Brumfiel

The Indian government has barred a group of nuclear scientists from meeting in New Delhi, where they planned to challenge key elements of the nation's nuclear programme, Nature has learned.

The International Panel on Fissile Materials (IPFM) is an independent group of two dozen scientists and policy analysts devoted to stirring debate on issues related to nuclear materials. The group was formed in 2006 and is funded by the MacArthur Foundation, a philanthropic organization based in Chicago, Illinois. The panel's draft version of the Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty, a proposal that would ban production of weapons-grade nuclear material worldwide, has received backing from Japan, Canada and the Netherlands in United Nations disarmament discussions.

. Reason one - Why Nuclear Energy can never be a solution to Global Warming:

Reason one = Nuclear Power powers Nuclear Weapons

The Nuclear Industry and their lobbyist still want us to believe that Nuclear Power is safe.

But the man in the street nowadays knows that Nuclear Power IS connected to Nuclear Weapons.
One of the big issues when there is news about Iran's Nuclear Industry is the talk about Enrichment and the danger of the process - that the same machinery can also be used to make Weapon Grade Uranium.

Some will say - yes, but that is Iran.

While that maybe true, we should not forget that there is something which is called Vertical Proliferation and is used by Nuclear Weapon States to enlarge their Nuclear Weapon Arsenals, the only difference is that they do not use Uranium Enrichment to make Nuclear Weapons usable Fissile Material, but use Reprocessing of the Fuel Rods of a Power Plant to make Weapon Grade Plutonium, which is even more powerful.

Some of you might think - Oh, What the Hell.

To wake them up, here is what Nuclear Hell Looks Like...

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were nuclear attacks near the end of World War II against the Empire of Japan by the United States at the order of U.S. President Harry S. Truman on August 6 and 9, 1945. After six months of intense fire-bombing of 67 other Japanese cities, the nuclear weapon "Little Boy" was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on Monday,[1] August 6, 1945, followed on August 9 by the detonation of the "Fat Man" nuclear bomb over Nagasaki. These are to date the only attacks with nuclear weapons in the history of warfare.[2]

The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki by the end of 1945,[3] roughly half on the days of the bombings. Since then, thousands more have died from injuries or illness attributed to exposure to radiation released by the bombs.[1] In both cities, the overwhelming majority of the dead were civilians.[4][5]

INTERNATIONAL PLANNING GROUP - FOR NUCLEAR ABOLITION, PEACE AND JUSTICE
Disarm Now! Mobilizing Call of the NPT Review 2010

Today our world is facing crises on an unprecedented scale - global warming, poverty, war, hunger, and disease. They threaten the very future of life as we know it, and on a daily basis bring death, sorrow and suffering to the majority of people on our planet. Yet these problems are almost entirely the results of human action and they can be equally be resolved by human action. We have an unprecedented opportunity to create the political will to manage the riches and natural bounty of our world in such a way as to meet the needs of all peoples, and to enable us to live together in peace and justice

Such is the desire of the overwhelming majority of peoples, yet we face a situation today where global military spending - money for killing - has now reached a total of $1.46 trillion in 2008. Furthermore, nine countries maintain arsenals of nuclear weapons - all together, over 23,000 warheads. These uniquely destructive weapons can not only destroy life on our planet many times over, but they are also used as political weapons of terror, reinforcing an unjustifiable global inequality. The eradication of these weapons will not only end the threat of global annihilation and this hierarchy of terror, but it will unlock enormous resources to address climate change and mass poverty, serve as the leading edge of the global trend towards demilitarisation, and make advances in other areas of human aspiration possible.

In spite of treaty obligations and international resolutions and rulings over the decades since the criminal atomic bombings of Japan by the United States in 1945, the nuclear weapons states have failed to eliminate their nuclear arms. Their continued possession of these weapons, together with modernisation of systems and increasingly aggressive nuclear use policies in recent years, have contributed to an increasing tendency towards their proliferation - and a greater likelihood of nuclear war.

The nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) requires both non-proliferation and disarmament, and must be supported and strengthened - yet it lacks a concrete process for achieving these essential goals. Furthermore, there are grave problems with its Article IV. This guarantees the right to peaceful nuclear energy but overlooks the inextricable link between nuclear power and weapons technologies and their health and environmental costs.

The newly-launched International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) provides an opportunity to phase out nuclear power, superseding the Article IV guarantee. This said, the NPT continues to provide the framework for advancing towards an essential new initiative - a timetable for the elimination of nuclear weapons so urgently sought by the global majority.

The NPT Review Conference in May 2010 presents a precious opportunity to take that initiative. It is an opportunity that must on no account be missed. After the spiralling aggression of the Bush era, the Obama presidency provides a new context for our campaigning. President Obama's commitment - alongside that of President Medvedev of Russia - to global abolition of nuclear weapons is greatly welcomed, and their first steps towards bilateral reductions and support for treaties restricting nuclear developments are positive. However, the goal of global abolition cannot be postponed into the indefinite future, for only a defined, achievable and timetabled process can halt the proliferation that threatens us all.

To this end, to secure a future for humanity and our planet, to help create the conditions for a world of peace, justice and genuine human security, we urge the 2010 NPT Review Conference to make an unambiguous commitment to begin negotiations on a convention for the time-bound elimination of all nuclear weapons - a Nuclear Weapons Convention.

Such a step will not happen without the active encouragement of civil society, giving voice to the yearning of the global majority for a world free from the fear of nuclear annihilation. We urge all those who share this vision to join us in mobilising for the international peace conference in New York on May 1st and the International Day of Action for a Nuclear Free World, in New York and globally, on May 2nd, as well as for the presentation of petition signatures to the NPT Review Conference.

WORLDWIDE PEACE GROUPS URGE NUCLEAR WEAPONS STATES TO TAKE NUCLEAR WEAPONS OFF ALERT

Abolition 2000, the global umbrella group of over 2000 peace and nuclear disarmament groups worldwide who seek the abolition of nuclear weapons, has written to the heads of every country that has a nuclear weapons capability, urging them to move to as low an operational status for those nuclear weapon systems as possible as a first step to the complete elimination of nuclear weapons and the implementation of a global nuclear weapons convention that would provide a legal framework permanently outlawing nuclear weapons.

According to Abolition2000 spokespeople Dominique Lalanne of France, John Hallam of Australia, and Manuel Padilla of the USA, 'There have been over the years a number of incidents involving especially US and Russian nuclear weapons systems in which it is not an exaggeration to say that the end of the world has been potentially minutes away. We've been saved by a cool Russian colonel who didn't press a red button, by an aide to President Yeltsin who said 'excuse me mr President let's wait another minute' and by a US minuteman launch control officer who as a practice launch sequence turned into the real thing and wouldn't stop, ordered heavy military vehicles driven on top of silo doors.

We can't keep on in effect relying on divine intervention to save us from the consequences of our own stupidity. Nuclear weapons need to be taken off quick launch status and we need to redouble our efforts to abolish them."
The letter has been sent to Presidents, as well as prime ministers, foreign ministers and secretaries of state and UN diplomatic missions in the US, Russia, France, the UK, China, the DPRK, India, Pakistan, and Israel.

Dear President,

Perhaps most dangerous aspect of today's nuclear arsenals are the many thousands of nuclear weapons which remain on high-alert, launch-ready status. There is strong international agreement, shown by the overwhelming support in the General Assembly that "Calls upon the nuclear-weapon States to take measures to reduce the risk of an accidental or unauthorized launch of nuclear weapons and to also consider further reducing the operational status of nuclear weapons systems in ways that promote international stability and security" .

The international community, including the leaders of States possessing nuclear weapons, has recognised that any use of nuclear weapons would have catastrophic consequences - and thus a practice and norm of non-use has developed.

However, as the leader of a State in possession of nuclear weapons, you have the possibility to initiate a nuclear war at any time. With more than 20,000 nuclear weapons in the world, a nuclear first-strike can start a chain reaction that would end in a nuclear holocaust. Recent scientific studies tell us that the detonation of even 1% of the operational nuclear arsenals during a conflict would cause grave changes in the climate and ecology of the Earth; a large nuclear war would end human existence.

Thus, the operational and deployed nuclear arsenals of the States possessing nuclear weapons and the continued policies providing for possible use in a wide range of circumstances, represent a self-destruct mechanism for humanity. It only takes a single failure of nuclear deterrence to trigger global nuclear suicide.

Yet, as the leader of a Nuclear Weapon State, you can choose to act now to prevent such an ultimate catastrophe. We urge you to issue a Presidential Decree which forbids the launch of nuclear weapons based only on a tactical or strategic warning of attack (electronic signals from early warning systems, which could be a false warning or represent conventional warheads), and to de-alert your launch-ready nuclear forces, rendering them unable to be used within only a few minutes. Such de-alerting has to be studied for each specific case, but it MUST be accomplished to remove the appalling danger of instant nuclear extinction.

The world is relying on you to find the vision and will to eliminate the danger of accidental nuclear war and reduce international tensions caused by the permanent maintenance of nuclear weapons on high-alert. It is time to stop threatening the nations of the world with instant incineration.

Of course the only way to ensure that nuclear weapons are never used by accident, miscalculation or intent is to prohibit and eliminate them. This truth was self-evident from the moment the weapons were first created - as evidenced by the unanimous call for their elimination in the UN General Assembly's first resolution in 1946.

Until recently, such an aim appeared utopian. However, the political and technical feasibility of nuclear abolition is now apparent from the statements of world leaders, the agreement at the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference and the Five-Point-Plan put forward by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon which includes a draft treaty (Model Nuclear Weapons Convention). De-alerting is included as the first step in the phased disarmament program outlined in the Model NWC. Such a de-alerting process, with the official participation of your State, would greatly lower the danger to our world, increase the security of all people, and prepare a new era of sharing a common responsibility for the survival of our planet and species.

We urge you to prohibit launch on warning, de-alert your nuclear weapons and join the process to achieve a global prohibition and elimination of nuclear weapons under a nuclear weapons convention.

Reason two = Nuclear Power is not a form of "green" energy and never will be _AND_ should be considered a serious health risk

We are told that nuclear power is about to achieve a "green renaissance," "clean coal" is just around the corner, and municipal garbage is a "renewable resource," which, when burned, will yield "sustainable energy." On the other hand, sometimes we are told that solar, geothermal and tidal power are what we really need to "green" our energy system.

How is a person to make sense of all these competing claims?

Luckily, scientists have developed two sets of criteria that we can use to judge the "greenness" of competing technologies. The first is called "The 12 principles of green engineering" and the second is "The 12 principles of green chemistry."...

...On the face of it, applying a "green principles" test to nuclear power would force us to conclude that it fails by any objective standard and that we should be looking elsewhere for green energy...

IS NUCLEAR POWER GREEN? -- By Peter Montague (in Rachel's Democracy & Health News #983, October 30, 2008) at green-changemakers.blogspot.com

Apart from not being green. Uranium mining and Nuclear Power Generation are both very serious health risks factors. Your are adviced to read:

Human Health Implications of Uranium Mining and Nuclear Power Generation by Dr. Cathy Vakil M.D., C.C.F.P., F.C.F.P. _AND_ Dr. Linda Harvey B.Sc., M.Sc., M.D. at www.safewater.org

The Nuclear Waste problem should also be part of this discussion, I think:

One Million Years of Isolation: An Interview with Abraham Van Luik by Geoff Manaugh of BLDGBLOG about the technical nature of nuclear waste storage and what it means, on the level of geological engineering, to quarantine a hazardous material for more than one million years.

On the same issue:

The Curse of Gorleben Germany's Endless Search for a Nuclear Waste Dump By SPIEGEL Staff

Reason three - Why Nuclear Energy can never be a solution to Global Warming
:

Reason three = Nuclear Power is far too expensive, if you take in all the costs and not only the cost of the energy production

Over the last few years the nuclear industry has used concerns about climate change to argue for a nuclear revival. Although industry representatives may have convinced some political leaders that this is a good idea, there is little evidence of private capital investing in nuclear plants in competitive electricity markets. The reason is simple: nuclear power is uneconomical.

In an excellent recent analysis, "The Nuclear Illusion," Amory B. Lovins and Imran Sheikh put the cost of electricity from a new nuclear power plant at 14¢ per kilowatt hour and that from a wind farm at 7¢ per kilowatt hour. This comparison includes the costs of fuel, capital, operations and maintenance, and transmission and distribution. It does not include the additional costs for nuclear of disposing of waste, insuring plants against an accident, and decommissioning the plants when they wear out. Given this huge gap, the so-called nuclear revival can succeed only by unloading these costs onto taxpayers. If all the costs of generating nuclear electricity are included in the price to consumers, nuclear power is dead in the water.

NUCLEAR ABOLITION, CLIMATE PROTECTION, AND OUR CITIES' FUTURE
.

I think the Lawyers' Committee on Nuclear Policy's webpage full with YouTube videos on the above mentioned issue is not only of use in the US, but also in Europe and the rest of the World.

Let us citizens of this World tell our Governments we want Nuclear Abolition and a greener planet worked on starting this minute. There is no time to loose if we want to be safe from as well the Nuclear Weapon Threat including the climate effect of a Nuclear War as the Global Warming threat to us all and our planet. The money no longer used to build Nuclear Weapons and keeping the Nuclear Weapons deployed and ready could be divested from the Military Industrial Complex and invested in greening the planet, creating jobs, health care etc.

Let us call for Nuclear Weapons Convention negotiating starting tomorrow and Nuclear Weapons Abolition preferably before 2010 or at least before 2020...
And let us call to protect the planet with a sustainable way of life starting now !

There is no time to loose !!!

What is or

Vertical Gardens: Redefining the Urban Jungle.

Thanks to French botanist Patrick Blanc, Plant Walls - vertical gardens attached to hotels and museums - are sprouting up in cities worldwide...

...Blanc's brainchild, called Le Mur Végétal, or Plant Wall, is a dense sheet of vegetation that can grow against any surface, or even in midair. It works by doing away entirely with dirt, instead growing plants hydroponically in felt pockets attached to a rigid plastic backing. First exhibited in 1994 at the International Garden Festival in Chaumont-sur-Loire, France, the Plant Wall immediately caught the public's attention...

A Columbia professor believes that converting skyscrapers into crop farms could help reduce global warming and make New York cleaner. It's a vision straight out of Futurama—but here's how it might work.

Urban farming has always been a slightly quixotic endeavor. From the small animal farm that was perched on the roof of the Upper West Side's Ansonia apartment building in the early 1900s (fresh eggs delivered by bellhop!) to community gardens threatened by real-estate development, the dream of preserving a little of the country in the city is a utopian one. But nobody has ever dreamed as big as Dr. Dickson Despommier, a professor of environmental sciences and microbiology at Columbia University, who believes that "vertical farm" skyscrapers could help fight global warming.

Imagine a cluster of 30-story towers on Governors Island or in Hudson Yards producing fruit, vegetables, and grains while also generating clean energy and purifying wastewater. Roughly 150 such buildings, Despommier estimates, could feed the entire city of New York for a year. Using current green building systems, a vertical farm could be self-sustaining and even produce a net output of clean water and energy.

U.S. Department of Energy -- Residential Buildings - Energy Efficient Building Practices: Whole Building Approach
.

Achieving a comfortable, energy-efficient home requires a different approach to the traditional home-building process: a whole building approach. This perspective views the house as an integrated system with each component working together to achieve greater energy efficiency and comfort.

For new construction, the whole building approach begins in the design phase and continues until construction is complete.
It involves close coordination among the architect, site planner, and construction trades to design and build all aspects of the home with the goal of maximizing energy efficiency while ensuring good indoor air quality and occupant comfort.

The whole building concept, as its name implies, is comprehensive. It encompasses the climate, the specific home site, the foundation, walls, and roof, the use of windows and doors and natural lighting, the heating and cooling systems, appliances, and lighting. By integrating these components, a home can be built for the same or lower cost than a traditional home and can offer significant savings in energy use. For example, a properly sealed and insulated home that incorporates windows for natural lighting will be able to use a smaller, less expensive heating and cooling system. It will also require less energy for indoor lighting.

Comment Ak Malten, Pro Peaceful Energy Use:
Although it is presented in a not so glossy fashion, this site will give you a lot of information on how to save energy in your house.

Solar Thermal Power: Not Forgotten
.

More energy from the sun hits the Earth in one hour than all of the energy consumed by humans in an entire year.

According to the Department of Energy, in 2001 the world consumed at an average rate of more than 13 trillion watts ( 13 terawatts, TW), just a fraction of the 120,000 TW of energy available that falls to Earth - free.
Life on Earth long ago realized that the sun was the best way to get free energy, just look around at all that green stuff growing outside.

Today, solar energy accounts for only 0.1% of our energy portfolio.

We will likely look back at the use of fossil fuels as an obvious misstep in technology development. A small blip on the radar of human technology, like a toddler testing the boundaries of what is possible.

Solar start-up scores with series of tubes
.

Solyndra, a start-up making thin-film photovoltaic systems, has secured $600 million in funding.

It's additionally secured $1.2 billion in contracts from clients in the U.S. and Europe, the Fremont, Calif.-based company revealed Tuesday.

What start-up gets that kind of funding and client promise? Basically, one that's invented thin-film solar panels shaped like old-school fluorescent lightbulbs.

Since 2005, Solyndra has quietly been developing a proprietary CIGS-based thin film photovoltaic (PV) system and a staff of more than 500 employees.

CIGS is a material that includes a combination of copper, indium, gallium, and selenide. It's now being used by quite a number of companies to make thin-film solar cells among other things.

Solyndra's cylindrical PV panels don't have to be spaced to leave room for rotation toward the sun as with flat solar panels. The panels are actually rows of cylindrical tubes which are installed horizontally and close to one another.

The tubes can "capture sunlight across a 360-degree photovoltaic surface capable of converting direct, diffuse, and reflected sunlight into electricity," according to Solyndra.

Using Solar Power is a top rate life saving idea in the tropics and the desert.

In the desert the main problem for a human is to find and / or to make drinkable water. But with the use of Concentrated Solar Power CSP and Solar Power SP techniques this could be a thing of the past. The same is equally valid for Solar Cooking, which makes sense in the desert, without plenty of firewood to use.

In the tropics these techniques are also useful, while it saves time and wood to build a fire for cooking and to purify dirty water. It can be done with CSP and SP techniques

Repower America
.

America faces unprecedented economic, environmental and national security challenges. The US urgently need new jobs, stable energy prices, and freedom from dirty fossil fuels and global warming pollution.

Finally, there’s a solution as big as our problems: a bold plan to Repower America with 100% clean electricity within 10 years.

First described in a speech in July by Al Gore, Repower America means new industries with high-paying jobs. It means lower energy costs. It means replacing coal and foreign oil with clean domestic sources. It is a vital step toward protecting the environment and solving the climate crisis.
How do we do it?

Invest in three core areas – efficiency, generation and transmission.

  • Energy Efficiency: A national upgrade to eliminate waste, save money, and improve comfort. Make every bit of energy we produce work harder for us.
  • Renewable Generation: Accelerate the ramp-up of clean, renewable electricity sources through policies that support increased private and public investment in technologies that work, like wind, solar, and geothermal.
  • National Unified Smart Grid: Modernize transmission infrastructure so that clean electricity generated anywhere in America can power homes and businesses across the nation; Build national electricity 'interstates' that move power quickly and cheaply to where it is needed; Establish local smart grids that buy and sell power from households and support clean plug-in cars.

Fighting Global Warming with my own Energy Power System -- Living off the grid - making enough energy for my home and even have Energy left to drive my car, a pipe dream, right?

Think about it. Would this not be what you would want for Sint Nicolaas ?

You mean: Having no Energy bill to power my housing and the rest of my gear and to drive around for free in my electric car too ?

Yes, it will cost you a lot, but then you would help to fight Global Warming also. And the project might be subsidized for saving the environment etc.

Michael Strizki did just that ! ... His energy mix is Solar in combination with Hydrogen Power...

Insolating your house is good for the planet, your self and your energy bill savings - Here is the top 3 of saving possibilities
.

Insolating your house will give you more comfort - in winter time your house will be warmer, in summer it will be cooler. Your house will therefore need less energy heating and cooling the inner space. You can in this fashion lower your CO2 footprint - which keeps the earth cool.... And it will lower your energy bill considerably

Here are some facts:

Isolating the roof will save 30% on your energy bill a year.

Isolating the outer walls will save 10-15% on your energy bill a year.

Isolating the floors will save 10% on your energy bill a year.

Isolating these 3, the roof, the walls and the floors would add up to 50-55% saving on your energy bill.

Now what would be the easiest way to accomplish this ?

Ah, I hear roof top gardens, a good and nice example to isolate your roof in a beautiful way !     But that is not what I head in mind....

Adobe walls !... An other very beautiful and effective isolation, which could also be helpful

The ultimate answer would be to start living underground....

No way, I am not a mole, I want fresh air to breath ! And you could have it, plenty

"An underwater turbine that generates electricity from tidal streams was plugged into the UK's national grid today. It marks the first time a commercial-scale underwater turbine has fed power into the network and the start of a new source of renewable energy for the UK.

Tidal streams are seen by many as a plentiful and predictable supply of clean energy. The most conservative estimates suggest there is at least five gigawatts of power in tidal flows around the country, but there could be as much as 15GW.

The trial at Strangford Lough, in Northern Ireland, uses a device called SeaGen and generates power at 150kW. However, engineers have plans to increase power to 300kW by the end of the summer. Will the New Generation of Biofuel be a better solution for the fight against Global Warming ? -- The story of Algae biofuel and its huge potential
.

What should one know about the danger of the old generation of Biofuels ?

The biggest threat of the old type of biofuels was threefold:

To make the biofuel one used crops of agrarian products, like maize and sugar cane, which are normally eaten to make a relative very little amount of biofuel out of it.

The consequences were that great fields of farm land were necessary and used to grow monoculture crops for the production of biofuel instead of food. It produced a very little amount of biofuel in the form of ethanol or biodiesel, compared to its potential for the production of food. So it was a waste of farmland, but it was done because the crops produced would bring in more cash, if it was sold to produce fuel, then it would if it was sold as food.

Then after a while local people started protests because the prices of food, like grain and maize were becoming so high, that people could almost not or not buy them to make food or buy the food in the form of bread

Fortunately this was then recognized as a bigger problem then the shortage of fuel and the policies supporting the production of biofuel were reversed. Biofuel became known as a threat to the world instead as a good way to fight Global Warming.

But... But what if we could produce a biofuel, which is made in a different fashion of a crop not normally produced for food, which would relative to the old generation of biofuel production crops, produce an enormous amount of fuel on less farmland or even in the desert ?

What or which crop would be able to do just that ???

Well here is the story of Algae biofuel and its huge potential...

MIT Researcher Mimics Photosynthesis To Turn Water Into Hydrogen And Oxygen
.

Electrolysis Breakthrough for Solar Storage

Inspired by the photosynthesis performed by plants, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have combined a liquid catalyst with photovoltaic cells to achieve a super efficient (nearly 100%) electrolysis.

This becomes a very effective storage system. One obvious extension of this would be the cost-effective storage of daytime solar energy for night-time use. Excess capacity during the day could be stored as hydrogen and oxygen, then used in fuel cells at night when needed.

We need more public support to reach for a Nuclear (Weapon) Free World; in my vision also a greener world in which the use of sustainable energy forms are no longer related to conflicts and war like oil, gas and nuclear energy forms were before.
